All infants have flat feet for a year or two after they begin to stand. In this common condition, the longitudunal arch of the foot is reduced by the presence of a medical fat pad,so that while standing, the medical border of the foot contacts the ground (pronation). This fat pad usually disappears once weight-bearing stance is attained. The persistence of flat feet in children and adult may be associated with generalized ligament laxity or muscle weakness.
